Outdoorama on the Rez

We had a blast!

Each year we hold Outdoorama around the same time as National Hunting and Fishing Day in an effort to get kids and anyone interested in the outdoors to step outside for a hands-on experience with the tools and concepts of hunting and fishing in Mississippi. This year was successful in so many ways, hundreds of kids got to participate and learn everything outdoors. MDWFP officers stationed around Turcotte were able to help everyone whether it was shooting or fishing. Almost all the kids caught a fish and many parents even got to see their child catch their first fish!  A quick walk over to the range and kids were learning safe practices with a gun and and the proper technique to shooting. We learned how to reload shells and how to tie a fly that we can use for fly-fishing. An archery range provided by Mississippi Bowhunter’s Association (MBA) was open as well as a sporting clay range that proved challenging as the clays whistled through the trees. All in all we had a great time and the weather was fantastic. Thank you for attending Outdoorama on the Rez and we hope to see you next year!

This event would not be possible without the help of the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks and a host of other conservation organizations and groups including Mississippi Museum of Natural Science, American Zookeepers Association, Keep the Rez Beautiful, Mississippi Bowhunter’s Association, Wildlife Rescue and Rehabilitation, Simmons Creative Productions, Barnett Reservoir Foundation, MS Dept. of Transportation, MS Dept. of Environmental Quality and more! Each of these organizations volunteers their time and talent to educate youth of all ages.

Special thanks to our sponsors: Academy Sports and Outdoors and Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation for supporting the program financially, Republic Services for providing trash boxes, Canton Wholesale Bait for supplying bait, and Charles Glover for providing the food.
