Youth ages 10-16 and adults are invited to submit photographs for entry no later than June 1, 2018. Participants must submit entries electronically. Overall winners will be announced Sunday, August 5, 2018, at 4 p.m. on stage during the 31st Annual Mississippi Wildlife Extravaganza at the Trade Mart in Jackson, MS.

Divisions

Youth Amateur Division

Open to amateur photographers 16 years of age and younger.

Adult Amateur Division
Open to amateur photographers over 16 years of age.

Advanced/Professional Division

Open to advanced/professional photographers of any age group.

Definitions

Amateur photographers are those photographers with no formal training or experience as photographers.  Amateur photographs are images taken with the most basic equipment, with minimal post-capture processing.

Advanced/Professional photographers are those photographers who have formal photography training, photography experience or who use advanced or complex camera and lens systems to capture images not generally available to or used by amateur photographers.  Advanced/professional images are images captured with advanced or complex camera and lens systems that show an obvious and significant quality difference from images that are captured with the most basic photography equipment by photographers with limited training and experience.

  • Mississippi’s Natural Landscapes – Panoramas are accepted
  • Wildlife Birds (Wildlife must be native to Mississippi.)
  • Wildlife Other (Wildlife must be native to Mississippi.)
  • People (People must be engaged in some type of outdoor activity – hunting, fishing, canoeing, hiking, etc.)
  • Floral Macro
  • Macro (Wildlife / Nature)
  • Mississippi Landmarks
  • Fine Art Black and White (Photos entered into this category must be nature-based.)
  • Creative Filter Smartphone Photography (Youth Only)


Contest Rules

  1. Participants must submit entries electronically.
  2. Photos must be taken in Mississippi.
  3. Entries must be received by the Mississippi Wildlife Federation no later than June 1, 2018.
  4. You may not manipulate the photo by adding or removing objects (including signatures and borders) and you can’t use special effects.
  5. You may crop, rotate, resize, sharpen, convert to black and white, adjust white balance,  apply color corrections and adjust light levels so long as they do not violate rule 4 by adding new objects to the photograph.
  6. Please submit entries in JPEG (.jpg) digital format, at least 3600 pixels width (horizontal image) or at least 2408 pixels tall (vertical image), saved at 300 DPI resolution.
  7. There is no limit on the number of photos entered in either the youth or adult amatuer group, up to 10 photographs may be entered at $25 per set.  Entrants may place all photos in one category or divide their entries into different categories.
  8. Only four entries are allowed per category in the advanced/professional group  for a total of 32 entries.  The fee to enter this division is $75.

The Mississippi Wildlife Federation reserves the right to move or reject any entry it feels was entered inappropriately.  Participant will be notified via email.

Instructions

Size photo entries in JPEG (.jpg) digital format, at least 3600 pixels with (horizontal image) or at least 2408 pixels tall (vertical image), saved at 300 DPI resolution.

  • Install Dropbox on your computer by clicking here. This software is free.
  • Once you install Dropbox, sign into your account.
  • Name each photo to include the following information in this order:
    • Your name
    • City/State
    • Division
    • Name of photograph
    • Category

    i.e. MelanieStarnes.FlorenceMS.AdultAmateur.FishingDaywithDad.People

  • Group your entries into category folders with the appropriate name. These folders need to include your name also, i.e. MelanieStarnesMississippiNaturalLandscapes. Folder names are:

Mississippi Natural Landscapes – Panoramas are accepted.
Wildlife Birds (Wildlife must be native to Mississippi.)
Wildlife Other (Wildlife must be native to Mississippi.)

  • Place your photo entries in the proper folder on your computer.
  • Upload the folders containing the contest entries to Dropbox by simply dragging and dropping into the Dropbox folder.
  • When you open your Dropbox folder you will see an option to Launch the Dropbox website. Once the site is lauched you will see a tab for Sharing Folders. Click on Share a folder.
  • On the next screen click I want to share an existing folder.
  • Highlight the folder(s) you want to share with the MississippiWildlife Federation and click next.
  • Send the invitation to share your folders to mstarnes@mswf.org. In the comments section write 2018 Photo Contest Entry.
  • Then click share the photo and an invitation will be sent directly to my desk so that I can access your photos.
  • Finally, please pay for your entries online or call 601-605-1790 with your payment information. There is no limit on the number of photos entered in the amateur divisions as long as they are entered in sets of up to 10 photographs at $25 per set. Entrants may put all photos in one category or divide their entries into different categories. Entry fee for the Advanced/Professional Division is $75 and is limited to 4 entries per category for a total of 32 photographs.

Prizes

The first place photograph in each category and age group will be enlarged for display during the Mississippi Wildlife Extravaganza scheduled August 3-5, 2018 at the Trade Mart in Jackson, MS. These photographs will also be displayed on our website, www.mswildlife.org. From these finalists one will be picked as the Best Overall Photograph in both the Youth and Adult Amateur Divisions and awarded $300 each. The Judges Special Recognition Award, which may or may notBy Vicki Torrey be awarded annually, will receive $100. The Best Overall Photograph in the Advanced/Professional Division will receive $1,000. The winning photographs will also be published in MWF’s magazine, Mississippi Wildlife (possible cover) and other MWF publications. The overall winner in each division will be announced on stage at 4:00 p.m. Sunday, August 5, 2018. Finalists’ enlarged photographs may be used by MWF as display material for educational programs. Appropriate credit will be given to photographers.

Note: By entering photographs in this contest I grant the Mississippi Wildlife Federation unrestricted rights to use said photographs (not to be resold or for profit) as long as appropriate credit is given the photographer.
