Eight youth squirrel hunts will be held throughout Mississippi on Saturday, February 9, 2019.
These hunts were developed to introduce youth ages 10 – 15 to hunting and conservation. Kids and their accompanying adults will learn about the role of hunting in wildlife conservation, hunting ethics, wildlife biology and firearm safety. Then head to the woods on a real hunt! The events are provided by the Mississippi Wildlife Federation, Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks (MDWFP), and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service at no cost to participants.
During the one-day events, youth participants will be exposed to principles of hunting and firearms safety, squirrel hunting with dogs, and the daily life of squirrels and their habitats. Best of all, youth participants will have the opportunity to participate in a squirrel hunt!
A completed Photo Release will also be required to participate. The waiver may be submitted on the day of the event. Each hunt site is limited to 20 youth participants. If the primary hunt site you apply for is full, we will try to place your application in your secondary choice if available.
Applicants will be notified by email regarding space availability for each location. A parent or legal adult guardian is required to accompany youth participants. Guns and ammunition for target shooting and hunting will be provided. Completion of a hunter education course by youth participants is not required. Selected participants will need to arrive no later than noon (12:00 pm), and the event will conclude by 6:30 pm. Supper will be provided, but participants will need to bring a lunch or eat before arrival.
These youth hunts are supported by funding from the MDWFP Youth Participation Initiative Program, the Mississippi Wildlife Federation, and the National Wildlife Federation. Thank you for applying for a youth squirrel hunt and for your support of hunting, wildlife conservation, and outdoor activities.
